How can I select which notifications I receive?

I am hard of hearing and use a Blue Tooth streamer for telephone calls and for watching TV. Whenever I receive a message or email on my Android G386T (T-Mobile), I get an audible notification that causes my streamer to interrupt what I'm listening to with a brief (but annoying) notification. I'd like to turn off notifications for anything other than phone calls, but I can't figure out how.
When I go to settings/notifications, that's all the farther I can get. Is there some way to specify which events result in notifications so that I can turn off the ones I don't want?

When you go to Settings, Notifications, do you not have Apps there, allowing you to choose those for which you wish to receive notifications, and of what type?

What version of the Android OS are you running?
