My Galaxy SIII just died last weekend-can not turn it on at all. I have the warranty so I was sent a new phone, but I can't figure out how to get the data off my dead phone and put it on my new phone. The instructions sent with the phone say I need to turn on the old phone, but I can't!

Look on Google Contacts. Any contacts there will sync to the new phone as soon as you give it the Google account. (There's also a gmail aggount - that's different, even if it's the same account.)

If the old phone can't be turned on, and you didn't back anything up, only what's backed up to Google can be recovered.

For future reference, read Backing up an Android Device. If you need it, back it up.
