Volume is stuck muted, how can I fix this?

Volume is stuck muted

My Samsung S4 since the new update has been experiencing some problems, one of which is that the media volume, phone volume and notification sounds do not work unless I have headphones plugged in. I have tried restarting the phone and clearing ram and clearing the recent applications tabs. As well as plugging in and unplugging a audio jack multiple times over the course of a few minutes with no results. What can I do to solve this?

Welcome to Android Central! Do any sounds play over the main speaker? What happens if you try to put someone on speakerphone? If no sounds are playing over the speaker, then the speaker may be faulty. Did this start immediately after the update?
