Try putting the SD card in a PC. Does it still show them there?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Are you talking about the microSD card, or the SIM card? Contacts wouldn't be stored on the microSD, but they can be stored on the SIM card.

If it was the SIM, then open your Contacts app, tap Menu>Settings, and look for an option to import contacts from SIM, or to select the SIM contacts to display.

In general, I would strongly recommend that you associate your contacts with your Google account instead, since those contacts get synced immediately to the Google cloud. That way, if something happens to the phone, that data is safe in the cloud. It's also much easier to manage and edit your contacts, as well as enter new contacts, on the Google Contacts website.
