Why is my phone not charging properly or AT ALL?

Hello,
I have only just registered with this site because this seems to be the only solution before I end up having to take my phone down to the repair shop.

Recently I have noticed my phone (Samsung Galaxy S3) is not charging properly, or not at all. It seems that when I have it turned on and charging, the battery percentage either charges EXTREMELY slow or it decreases. But, the last couple of days, I have turned my phone off to see if it charges better that way. It charged much quicker.

At the moment though, it seems to not charge at all, whether it is on or off.

Do I have to replace the battery in the phone, if so then would this effect my SIM card and the data I have stored on my phone?

Please reply ASAP, in need of feedback.

Thank you!

Welcome to Android Central. :)

Have you tried different charging equipment? In particular, the USB lead may need replacing. The USB port may also be suspect, perhaps damaged or clogged with fluff.

Replacing the battery, should you decide to do that, will not affect what is stored on the phone.
