How do I get GPS (via an app?) and how do I know which apps are free?

Welcome to Android Central! GPS is already a feature of your phone, and is accessible by apps that require GPS. So if you open Google Maps, it can locate you using GPS, as well as your cell or wi-fi signal. Go to Settings>Location, and make sure your Location services are turned on. Then set your Location Accuracy to High Accuracy (which uses both GPS and cell/wi-fi signal to get the most accurate position).

If you go to Google Play Store and select any app, it will tell you if it costs anything or if it's free. Many apps are free, but have in-app purchases, which means you have to pay for certain features. Other apps are only trial versions, so read the descriptions carefully.
