How do smartwatches work?

I don't fully understand how the smartwatch works.If I am out on the street and don't have my smartphone with me will the smartwatch on my wrist still work even if it is not Bluetooth range with my phone?Or it has to be within range of my phone?

I don't know very much myself, but I think you should be able to check the time and other services that don't require information from the internet. You won't receive notifications from your phone or be able to get updates on weather services and so on, as this requires your watch to have a connection to your phone. It might depend on the watch too, what you'll be able to do offline, as they have different specifications.

Thanks a lot,but if it won't work without connected to the phone what is the sense to have to carrie both with you?One in your pocket the other on your wrist?Makes not much sense to me.
