I can boot my phone, sign in, hear notifications but I can't see anything. Is there a Fix?

When I boot my samsung galaxy s3, I can do my lock pattern, but can only see anything when I use the dropdown notification menu. It can recieve calls and texts, but remains black, so I can only hope to touch the right thing. I heard that it's called the black screen of death, but I'm not so sure. I appreciate any possible fixes I can get.

Are you able to hook it up to Samsung Kies to back up your information. I would do that and then factory reset the device to see if it is a software issue.
