How do I get the book back to bright enough to read again (in bright daylight)

I'm reading a kindle book - I brushed the screen - and accidentally enlarged the font and the screen got dimmer. I pinched the screen back down to normal but cannot get the screen to brighten. Its the reader app only. everything is still bright. Brightness setting is still high.

Touch the screen with two fingers and move them up and down, this should increase / decrease the brightness
