    I know I can click on a client but can I just start a blank message?

    Hello. Hmm, in case this is urgent I will do my best to remember my old Note 3.
    If you are on Lollipop, in the Message app do you have Google's large blue icon over the lower section of the screen with a white pencil inside.

    Else on the Samsung message app of old I think there was a pencil icon or envelope icon along the top right, or compose new.

    Lol, I won't sleep now.

    On my at&t Note 4 using the stock messages app, if I want to send a text to someone not on my contact list, I just tap the pencil icon in the lower right of the screen, and it takes me to the screen where it asks me to enter the phone number of recipient(s).

    If I am texting someone on my contacts list, I would proceed in the same manner, but I would enter the first few letters of the contact's name, and there will be a list of names containing those letters for me to choose from.
