Nexus 4 text message "couldn't be sent" notification error

A

AC Question

Every time I enter the text message app on my Google/LG Nexus 4, it pops up a notification message saying that "[#] messages could not be sent". I tap on the notification and it takes me to my text message hub but not to the actual text message thread regarding which messages were not sent (since it is more than one text that apparently was not sent, it might be because it's regarding two different threads). I have deleted almost all threads, cleaned my cache (with the DU Speed Booster app), and power cycled my phone several times. I did another search on this site and found a thread that suggested (for other Android devices) to hold the power and up-volume buttons to enter a sub-system menu to try clearing out the cache that way.

Nothing has worked and I do not understand why it continues to give me this error.

I would be so grateful for your help.
