Why would I be getting someone else's messages?

I was sitting next to my friend at a party and she was texting a third person. I kept receiving those texts and so did that person. Does anyone know why this would happen. We both have androids. It just really weirded me out.

Is your friend using group messaging? I don't use group messaging, but some of my friends do. If they send a group message that includes me plus other people I don't know, then the other people reply to everyone, I'll get texts from people I don't even know.
