how do I get my contact list to stop updating

It has been trying to update for days. Seems to be stuck in the cycle

From the sync options just un-tick the Sync Contacts option. This should stop it from updating. If you re-enable the option it should force a restart of the process.
If it still gets stuck, check your credentials to make sure you don't have the wrong password, and also check that your Contact Names don't have 'weird' symbols as these sometimes can bork the sync process.
