S4 Headset issue?

[AC Question]

My friend wanted to use his Xbox headset to talk on his phone, he purchased a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter, it has three rings. His reason for wanting to do this is because we use Skype to talk instead of the Xbox party. For some reason when he tries to talk it doesn't pick up his voice but he is able to hear out of it. The same setup works with my phone but I have a different adapter and brand of phone. Does anyone have any idea how he would be able to fix this?
