I have a Samsung Galaxy 5. When my phone is asleep, I often do not get notifications (sounds) when I have an email or message. I do not lock my screen; just swipe to turn it on. Sometimes a sound will come through, but more often than not I only get it after I have swiped.

Welcome to Android Central! Are you relying on wi-fi while the phone is asleep, or do you always have mobile data on? If you have mobile data off and are relying on wi-fi, then go to Settings>Wi-fi, tap Menu>Advanced, and make sure Keep Wi-fi On During Sleep is set to Always.
