Is this feasible / sensible to do this so that it can be patched to offer protection against the "Stagefright" vulnerabilitty or should the phone be binned? Also, what can be done for an old (maybe) but good working GT-I9000 running 2.3.6?

    Regards

Welcome to the forums. You should be able to disable automatically downloading of media in your messaging settings. That should help a lot for the Stagefright exploit.

You can also see more detail about the exploit here: Android 'Stagefright' exploit: What you need to know | Android Central
