Why is my Samsung Galaxy Star Plus gt-s7262 shows 0 charge when it should actually be 100?

Why My samsung galaxy star plus gt-s7262 shows 0% charge when it should actually be 100%.

The charge percentage indicator changes constantly and the phone asks to be charged again although I've had the phone plugged for several hours.
What should I do with this problem? Is it a problem of the battery or the software? Should I reset the phone and erase everything I have in it?

Please please help!

Does the performance of the phone suggest that a new battery may be needed?
If you have access to the battery, does it look undistorted in shape?
