Call log and SMS won't show contact name if the number is not exactly what's in contacts

e.g. 1234567 and +18681234567 is considered two different phone numbers. How do I tell contacts that my area code is +1868 so that it recognises the contact?

    Welcome to Android Central.

You would need to edit the contact number within your contacts to read the same as it is displayed when the call comes in, i.e., +18681234567, instead of just 1234567.

I had the same problem before, and entering the contact number the same as it is displayed when the call comes in eliminated the issue for me.

That's what I did. So I have no problems with incoming calls/SMS but now if I dial 1234567, it shows up in the log as 1234567 without the contact information.

Understood. You would need to dial the number with the "+1868" added to the number.

There is a setting within the call app under More Settings on my Note 4 that can be set up to automatically be programmed to automatically add an area code to the number display panel, but it will probably do that for all your manually dialed calls.

I feel your pain, lol. We're glad to have you as a new member.

Maybe someone else here will respond with a better solution. I'm sure there are others who would like to know as well.
