My sim card doesn't want to register on a network in my Samsung galaxy S4?

My friend gave me a samsung galaxy s4 that se picked up,and if i put my sim card in the phone noting happens ,i cant make any calls .If i try to make a call it tells me "not registered on network" what can i do??

Welcome to Android Central! What carrier is your SIM from? What carrier is the phone from? If they're incompatible, then that might be why you can't get a signal.

Without the name of the carrier, and the name on the SIM card, there's no answer anyone can give you.
