Multimedia message fails to download. Why?

I got a message from my friend:
Message size: 775KB
Multimedia message has arrived. Receive?
(Expire data: Sep 9 9:28 PM)
Download (button)

I tap the download button and get this response:
Message Expired or Not Available

How can I fix this?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone, and which carrier? Is your mobile data turned on? MMS requires mobile data to be on. If it's on, and you're still having issues, you may have to check you APN settings.
