On my Note 5, When I go to compose a new text message and tap the address book on the upper right corner, a huge list of contacts comes up. Some of the contacts have been deleted more than 5 years ago. How can I permanently delete the old contacts from my phone?

Go to Contacts (the face icon in the tray on the homepage). Delete the contact. Go to Google Contacts and make sure it got deleted there too. (There's no separate "text" contact list - your text app uses your contacts, the same ones your phone app uses.)
