Purchased Nexus 6 XT1103 from Amazon Friday, Sept 4, 2015. Opened box directly after UPS delivery on Sunday, Sept 6 via Prime. Was waiting at home to join Project Fi. Back cover blown completely off Nexus 6 frame except around camera lense. Unit would not power on at all.
Called Amazon to return and called, chatted, and emailed numerous Fi support personnel.
Finally, think one support person responded that exposure to too much heat in delivery process might have done this. I live in Las Vegas, NV. Temps recently solid low hundreds. But inside UPS truck, who knows? This unit arrived in sealed undamaged box and had never been used as far as I could tell.
So I guess message is Nexus 6 for whatever reason will have battery expand and blow back cover if exposed to too much heat inside car or home. If your cover is lifting away from frame, this may be the cause. Do not know if too prolonged use would cause it, too.
To the more technically inclined, does this expanding battery theory make sense regarding Nexus 6 back cover lifting away from frame?

It could. Have you contacted Google to see what's going on? They may offer a repair if it's still covered under warranty.
