Why is my phone making a ticking noise?

I have the galaxy nexus and recently it starting making a ticking noise which stops when I shut my phone off and then turn it back on again, but I'm trying to fix the problem entirely, not just temporarily. I have tried closing apps with no luck. It's coming from both the speaker and ear piece.

Welcome to Android Central! By earpiece, do you mean the speaker that goes up against your ear? Or do you mean earbuds? I'd be curious to know if the clicking is also heard through wired or Bluetooth earbuds/headphones.
