New to Android, moved from IOS. Just wondering if it's possible to set up Gmail to display new e-mail alert with few lines on locked screen when new email comes in .

What device? What version of Android? Lollipop has settings to enable that. The Moto X has Active Display to give you that. Different devices have different options/capabilities.

Generally, just adding the Gmail app and your account on your device should do this without additional settings. The push notification from Gmail works identical to the iOS push notification. Usually, when you get the pap and add your account to it, without any additional settings it does just as you need it to do - displays new messages with a few lines when they come in, if multiple ones come in, you just see the sender and the subject, but if it's one message, it does display part of its content.
