when typing sometimes symbols come up instead of letters. how do i correct it

if I push the "f" button I get the #. it seems to come up every second or third letter I try to type in a text or email. ( just using that button as an example. it happen with any button.)

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone, and which keyboard app? On many keyboards, if you long-press a key, you'll get an alternate symbol--could that be happening for you?
