How can I get my message notifications to light up my locked screen?

When my phone is sitting locked, black screen, how can you get messages to pop up and light up your screen, letting you know you have a message? I have the Samsung Note 5. I get the icon that shows once I've unlocked the phone and the LED light blinks when locked, but I'd like the message to pop up.
