Why did my htc change the notification sounds by itself and won't allow me to change them back?

I'm not sure how to explain this. Yesterday, I updated a few of my apps. Afterwards when I got a text message (the one that came with my phone) the sounds was completely different. It was no longer what I had changed it to, so naturally I tried to change it back. When I tried to in my settings, tap on the sound section, nothing pops up with the list of sounds. It even does that for my cell ring tones, clock, and any sound possible. So I went into my text message app settings, click on the notification sound bar and it says "unfortunately messages has stopped." I am unable to change any sound. I uninstalled all the updates I did even the apps I updated in case that did it and it's still the same. I have no idea what happened. Any ideas?
