Why can't i get sound when watching a video or using google maps on my Samsung Galaxy 5?

A few days ago i noticed i was not able to get sound on videos or google maps on my Samsung phone. I went into settings - sounds and notifications but the media button will not allow me to activate the sound. it is not blue and cannot be swiped to get volume. Also the loud speaker on my phone has a cross through it indicating media sound is not accessible.
