Cheaper Option...is it?

Okay so I'm thinking about a cheaper easier way about my plan, I wasn't sure so I came here. Anyways here is my question: Is it possible to buy a Verizon Hotspot for example the Ellipsis Jetpack, buy a cheap Verizon phone or tablet and then use Google hangouts as my 'service?'

You can, but it's kind of redundant and will present its own challenges I guess.
