I'm looking to get a new tablet for my mother's birthday. She has the 2nd gen kindle fire (not HD) at the moment. It's become so slow it's almost unusable. I was thinking of getting the new Amazon Fire HD 8inch 16gb but the OS restrictions are putting me off. I am aware that you can side load. I'm thinking of moving away from Amazon altogether and getting something else. What are some of the best android 8inch tablets around at the moment. I'll need a sd card slot and my budget is not huge. I've looked at the Samsung tab 4 and a few others. I'll even consider 7 inch ones but won't go above 9 inch. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Welcome to Android Central! I got my mother a Tab Pro 8.4 a while ago, and she loves it. Samsung doesn't make it any more, but you might be able to find some good refurbished units. The Tab S 8.4 is virtually the same, except with a slightly better screen (and a bit thinner, I think), so that would also be a decent choice.

The ZenPad 8 has gotten some decent reviews as well: Asus ZenPad 7.85" Intel Atom 32GB Black Z580C-B1-BK - Best Buy
