Google Photos showing more to backup than expected

I am trying to start to use Google Photos as a backup for the photos that I take with my phone camera. As I'm going to be moving to a Nexus 5X I want to start getting a bit more cloud-based with my photos.

Having deselected all of the other peripheral folders (which contain photos from my DSLR that I carry on my phone, which do not require backup) I selected "backup now" and the backup count is somewhere in the 900-1000 region, despite there only being ~260 photos on my phone (even including DSLR shots, I do not have 900+ photos on my phone).

I don't suppose anyone can shed some light on where all of these additional photos have come from? Has anyone else had a similar issue? I'm tempted to let it just crack on and back everything up to see what comes out, but I am finding the discrepancy a bit too big to ignore.

Thanks in advance!

Open the Photos app, swipe in from the left, and tap Device Folders. Which folders have a blue cloud icon? Those are the only ones that should be backing up.
