This is going to sound really stupid to a lot of people, but I have an IPod 5th gen and my dad got a samsung galaxy S3 from his work and he doesn't use a SIM card yet can just use his device on wifi. If i were to go out and buy an android, would I be locked out until I "activated" it? If you can, please explain exactly what the scenario would be, thanks!

Welcome to Android Central! It depends. Most devices can skip the activation screen for the carrier, either by tapping a Skip button, or by doing some "secret" code (e.g., on some devices, you tap all 4 corners of the screen in succession). If you want to be sure, search the web for "[your device] [your carrier] skip activation," and see if there's a reliable procedure available.

Also, if you got an unlocked device (i.e., not directly from the carrier), you don't have to worry about this at all.
