Screen slowly darkened and went black even though phonenotifications con't

Holding phone in hand when noted that the screen unexpectedly dimmed and then stayed black. Returned to manuf. and told there was a crack in the LCD so $$$ and no warranty. The phone was taken from front pocket to hand when this occurred. Not dropped, no water, no extreme temps, etc. In an Otterbox case w/ extra screen protector, too. I did not see a crack - albeit I did not use a microscope. Prior to the black screen o' death, there was a display issue that corrected w/ use of power switch & vol. button as suggested online. Suggestions?
