Why is disk encryption still converting 12 hours later?

I have had a Nexus 5 since release/KitKat, and recently upgraded to MarshMallow. Last night I decided to finally encrypt the disk, which is about half full of photos, videos, etc.

It's now about 12 hours into the conversion to a fully encrypted disk, and the phone is still doing its animated dots display. The up-front instructions said it might take an hour or more, but this is so much longer than that.

What to do?

If it's any consolation, I'm in the same boat, only 6 hours in, instead of 12. I can't get mine to stop with the dots, either.

Did you get yours back to any kind of working state?

FYI, it's probably best to post in the Google Nexus product forums, or fill out a support form on the Nexus support website. I wound up having to fill out a support form, and after 20 minutes of working with a support rep, we got my phone working again, with no data loss. (As long as it lasts until next Wednesday, when my 6P shows up, I'm happy.)
