Why am I getting "The contact does not exist" message?

I have some contact shortcuts on one of my home screens. All of a sudden this morning, when I tap on any of them, I get the message "The contact does not exist". And yet those contacts do exist in the Contacts app, and I have no problem seeing their phone numbers from there. Also, the contact shortcuts on my home screen still have their photos on the icons.

Anyone know what happened and how to correct it easily? I'd rather not re-create each shortcut individually if I don't have to.

OS: Android 4.1.2

Welcome to Android Central! Can you at least try re-adding the Contact widget for one of them? If that works, then at least you know that's one solution.
