Can't set up Gmail account on Android email app,'

[AC Question]

I reset my Huawei phone and changed my Google password. I then tried to set up my Gmail account but all I get is a message saying that the user name/password may be incorrect or imap/ smtp servers may be disabled. My Gmail account shows IMAP is enabled.
The name/password is correct and I have tried different manual settings, to no avail.
I am able to set up a BT account on the Android mail app.

Welcome to Android Central! Is 2-step authentication turned on for your Google account? If so, turn it off temporarily.
