Direct dial widget doesn't work with marshmallow?

I have a nexus 6 and updated to marshmallow.

All direct dial widgets give a response of "App not installed" when selected.

Does this have to do with permissions or something else?

How did you create the direct dial widgets? With a stock feature, from a third party app or using an action with a custom launcher?

stock feature I believe.

I held finger on home screen, clicked widgets, then dragged direct dial widget to home screen and selected contact.

edit: I just installed nova launcher and it asked me if I wanted to give the widget permission for contacts and then worked. I would rather not use nova. any idea how to give the widget permission in stock launcher?
