Text with 90 yr old without him having smartphone - only wifi.

I want to buy my 90yr old brother an "always-on" tablet or display device that will allow me and his family to send him text messages which will display and alert him when they have arrived. He refuses to buy a smart phone but has wifi and a computer but may only log on every few days. We want to be able to send him notes about family, reminders any time; simple messages not worth a phone call. He does have cell service on which he buys minutes for an old folding phone that he has trouble seeing or using text well.

Welcome to Android Central! You could use Hangouts, as long as you send him messages as Hangouts IM (and not SMS text messages). Hangouts is ubiquitous on Android devices, and can be installed on iPhones as well. In addition, you could also do a video chat or audio call using Hangouts.
