For my S5 prime (G906S, 5.0.1), the automatic brightness adjustment does not work while the phone is held at an angle. If the lights go on while I use my phone, the screen will stay dim and not adjust. If the phone is lying flat, the brightness will adjust.

This is especially annoying when I go from a dim room into the sunshine and then take the phone out.
The screen will come on very dim and will not adjust unless I hold the phone perfectly flat for several seconds.

This appears to be a feature, not a bug. I cannot fathom the reasons behind it, as it is a tremendous annoyance.
Is there any way of getting rid of this idiotic problem without using a third-party auto brightness app?

Welcome to Android Central! Do you have a screen protector or a case on? If so, they might be interfering somewhat with the ambient light sensor, such that the sensor has to be nearly perpendicular to the light rays that are striking the phone screen.
