Where are my phone contacts?

When I bought my new phone I took both the SIM card and sd card out of the ole phone and put theminto the new phone.none of my phone contacts seem to be in the contacts page apart from one number that I had dialled earlier.
My old phone is a Samsung Galaxy Ace; new one is a Moto XT 1021.
Now both cards are in the new phone, I can't get any contacts on the old one,obviously, but I thought the phone numbers on the sd card would show up on the new phone. What did I do wrong, please?

They may be on the old phone's storage. You can try exporting the contact list and importing it into Gmail: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/14024?hl=en
