every time I open contacts, logs, favorites, messaging or anything that wants to search the contact list it goes to a screen of "contacting updating" and does not stop until phone is rebooted. it repeats every time. if I dial a number from the keyboard it will find the contact associated with that number. any ideas?

Are your contacts saved to your Google açcount? If not, do so. When you're sure you have all your contacts in Gmail, try this:

    1. Disable contacts sync. Go to Settings > Accounts > Google > Select your account > Disable contacts sync.
    2. Delete all contacts on the phone. Go to Settings > Apps > All Apps > Contacts > Force stop > Clear cache > Clear data.
    3. Reboot the phone, then check to be sure all contacts are gone.
    4. Enable contacts sync and hope for the best.
