Can GPS location be turned off for certain apps individually?

I am using an app and I dont want the my gps location tracked. However, I would like to still run Maps, etc.

When you install an app you are notified of permissions ie access to media, location etc. Naturally Maps and GPS go hand in hand especially as the main use is navigation so you can expect GPS access to be granted in most circumstances. You could try to turn off a GPS and see if the app still runs. I'm running 5.1.1 but I understand Marshmallow will allow app users the option to refuse some permissions but I have no more info about that as I don't have Marshmallow

Marshmallow does allow the ability to adjust the permissions. One caveat to that though, if the app wasn't designed for MM you could introduce instability in the app by refusing permissions. The way to deny access to something the app wants permission to is to go into settings then apps, tap the app you want to modify then tap permissions and then you can select which ones to deny.
