SGS2 needs update

[AC Question]

My android version is currently 2.3.6 and it is very inconvenient at times because there are apps that I cannot download. I tried to use the built in software update but it always says," No firmware." I then tried to update the version through kies and all looks promising until ... unknown error. Neither kies nor smart switch is able to detect my phone and all they say is that my phone is unsupported. Kies and smart switch both said the exact same thing when I had my SGS3 so I don't know if they're just discriminating against me or what. But is there a way that I can actually update my OS?

Older devices are not necessarily capable, because of their hardware limitations, of running later versions of the OS.
