can't open new tab and only have one opened

I only have one tab open, still can't open another one I keep getting a message to close tabs because I've reached the maximum of 50 but only have one open! Is a Note 5 and not on easy mode.. please help

Welcome to Android Central! Are you using Chrome or the stock Internet browser? If you're using Chrome, go to its settings and make sure Merge Tabs and Apps is turned off. Then tap the tab manager button next to the URL bar and start closing tabs. If Merge Tabs and Apps is turned on, then each tab shows up in the Recent Apps list as a separate app, which means you'd have to swipe them away there.
