I am interested in installing CM12 for my HTC One M8. I am familiar with rooting smartphones but I've never installed a custom rom. Does installing a custom rom will prevent me to perform a factory reset on my device?

    Welcome.
No. You can do a factory reset and it will come back running CM12 or whatever ROM you have on there.

I've had that rom on that phone before. yes its possible, but it won't take you back to sense or stock htc software, it'll be reset to cm12 and you'd have to reinstall all your apps and such.
