Why does my LG G3 battery drain so fast when I travel?

My problem is that I go to college about two hours away from home. When I do go home I notice that my battery life is terrible. I always put my phone on airplane mode during the drive because I do not get a signal most if not the whole drive. I recently flew to another state, and I am noticing the same problem if not worse. I have tried taking the battery out for a few minutes and that did not seem to help.
