Why can't I see my screen but when I turn my phone on and off I can hear all the messages arriving?

Today ( I'm not a new android user at all ) my phone decided to do something really stupid to where I can't see my screen turn on at all. I have a Samsung galaxy S4 and the back button and the other little one next to the home in the center light up... the top one that tells you you have notifications lights up as well! I turned my phone off and on and I thought that this would go away but it hasn't! I can hear my e-mails arrive and my messages! Could someone please help me?!

It may be that the display has failed, in which case it would need replacing, unless the problem is simply a failed connection or similar.
