Got a new android phone (an LG G4) after 2 years with an iPhone, and decided to pop in the microSD card from my old HTC desire. On said SD card were a load of *.JPG56X42 files, however I am struggling to open them. Is there a way to do this, as I am assuming they are my photos from 3 or 4 years ago, and as such would quite like to see them.

Welcome to Android Central! I've never seen that extension before. What happens if you rename one of them to .JPG instead?
