Selfie sticks usually work by sending a Volume Up or Down command to the phone, either via the plug in the headphone jack, or via Bluetooth. You need to open the Camera app and go to its settings, and make sure the option to make the Volume button act as the shutter release is turned on. If the camera app doesn't have that option, then you may have to install a 3rd party camera app that does have that option.
