What is a software reset?

My battery as of late goes from 70% to 30% to 15% to 4% before cycling itself multiple times until battery fully drains. I take out the battery and when turned on my phone says I have around 45% life left.

I went to the sprint store in hopes to get the battery replaced. Mind you I'm no dummy when it comes to my phone. I know all about conserving battery life. I told the rep I've already done everything including a factory reset. He said he could do a software reset. That's the first time I've hear of it. Does anyone know what exactly that is and how to do it?

Hello, welcome to the forums! Which phone do you have? Have you already tried using a new battery? I'm not sure what he meant by software reset but probably be was telling you to flash the factory image, installing the OS back.
